Exercise 5.11

Curriculum Changes

Monday, the president of Akron University made the long anticipated public announcement to share the changes in course requirements for graduation by the institution which will be taking place next fall.

President David French made the discussed curriculum changes official and is already receiving positive feedback. The changes were prompted by a recent study which showed that only 15 percent of students took a foreign language and only 20 percent took a math course while at the university. Now, students entering next fall will be required to take one math, computer science and foreign language course. "We feel that these new course requirements will allow us to turn out better-educated persons," French said.

Arrest

Last night the police made an arrest on a local student who was caught driving while under the influence of alcohol, and causing a threat to surrounding drivers.

The arrest made on local 22-year-old Vanderbilt student Cathy Benson, who was found driving under the influence for the third time in six months last night. However, besides enjoying a little alcohol from time to time, Benson seems to be a model citizen. She is the daughter of locally prominent attorney Jim Benson and her mother, Sharon Benson, lives in Canada. She was this year's homecoming queen, has been a cheerleader and is a straight-A student. She will be staying at Vanderbilt for her graduate studies in biology.

Record Weather

Considering the fact that we are in the middle of February in Virginia, many Lynchburg residents are starting to ask questions about the weather, chiefly “why is it so hot?”

It seems to be unseasonably warm here in Lynchburg this month. According to the Port Columbus weather office, the high Monday was 82 degrees at 3:30 p.m. That was the hottest temperature for that date since 1888.
