Website Critique

Critique of ussoccer.com

Ussoccer.com is the official website for all news, highlights and information about the United States national soccer teams. There are many different national teams. There are youth teams for both boys and girls, and eventually the goal is to make the “senior team” which is the team that plays in the men’s and women’s World Cup every four years. As far as youth teams, for the boys there is the: U-14 (under-14) National Development Program; the U-15 Youth National Team; the U-17 Youth National Team; the U-18 Youth National Team; the U-20 National Team and the U-23 National Team. Youth teams for the girls include the: U-14 (under-14) National Development Program; the U-15 Youth National Team; the U-17 Youth National Team; the U-18 Youth National Team; the U-20 National Team and the U-23 National Team as well. The website, ussoccer.com includes news, information and highlights about each of the above mentioned teams as well as for the Men’s and Women’s national teams.

I like this website because I have many friends who play on different youth national teams whom I have played with in the past, and eventually I will prayerfully make one of the teams as well. Thus, it keeps me up to date with the progress of some of my peers as well as helps me set goals to help me reach my end goal of making the national team. I also like that the home page includes a sort of slide show format of all the most recent news highlights and information in the US Soccer world. On the other hand, I do not like how some of the links do not work, and others send you to incorrect websites (this is rare). Also, I do not like when the website takes a long time to load.

Chapter 6 Summary

Reporting With Images

Photojournalism is a difficult skill to master, but a very necessary one, which has evolved along with technology and journalism itself since its conception. Matthew Brady was one of the first well-known photo journalists, who is famous for his work during the Civil War. He went to different battlefields and camps and took pictures of the men and their environment. This meant a lot to their family members to know what their loved ones were going through.
Every journalist should understand the concept of photojournalism, and it really should be incorporated into all of their stories. This means that “All journalists should carry a camera and be familiar with its technical aspects; journalists should understand the software for editing photographs…and uploading photos to the web; …journalists must integrate photography into their thinking about every story they cover.
An important aspect of photojournalism is composition, which refers to “the arrangement of elements in a picture. The basic concepts of photojournalism include drama, action, expression, and unusualness. The audience needs to be captivated by what they see in your picture. It is also important to keep in mind the “threes of photojournalism.” First, there are the three types of shots: long range, midrange and close-up. Depending on what you are trying to convey, you would vary they type. Secondly, there is the “Rule of Thirds.” This helps with the compositional focus (emphasis) of the picture.
Photography in and of itself is not enough for successful photojournalism. All pictures need cutlines, or captions. They are needed because “a picture cannot explain itself.” Also, the photographer may be trying to imply something that he wants the reader to infer, but without a cutline the reader could miss the point entirely. Ethics are also important in photojournalism. The number one rule is “Take the picture.”

Curriculum Changes

Monday, the president of Akron University made the long anticipated public announcement to share the changes in course requirements for graduation by the institution which will be taking place next fall.

President David French made the discussed curriculum changes official and is already receiving positive feedback. The changes were prompted by a recent study which showed that only 15 percent of students took a foreign language and only 20 percent took a math course while at the university. Now, students entering next fall will be required to take one math, computer science and foreign language course. "We feel that these new course requirements will allow us to turn out better-educated persons," French said.

Arrest

Last night the police made an arrest on a local student who was caught driving while under the influence of alcohol, and causing a threat to surrounding drivers.

The arrest made on local 22-year-old Vanderbilt student Cathy Benson, who was found driving under the influence for the third time in six months last night. However, besides enjoying a little alcohol from time to time, Benson seems to be a model citizen. She is the daughter of locally prominent attorney Jim Benson and her mother, Sharon Benson, lives in Canada. She was this year's homecoming queen, has been a cheerleader and is a straight-A student. She will be staying at Vanderbilt for her graduate studies in biology.

Record Weather

Considering the fact that we are in the middle of February in Virginia, many Lynchburg residents are starting to ask questions about the weather, chiefly “why is it so hot?”

It seems to be unseasonably warm here in Lynchburg this month. According to the Port Columbus weather office, the high Monday was 82 degrees at 3:30 p.m. That was the hottest temperature for that date since 1888.

Interview of Chancellor Falwell

Were I given the opportunity to interview Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr., I would ask him questions about the administrative side of his job. I would ask him questions about topics such as the difficulty level, and what makes it difficult. Three sources I would use would be the official Liberty website (liberty.edu), any past interviews on the subject, preferably by the Liberty Champion, and any books that he or his father, or for that matter any University Chancellor has written on the subject.

Questions:
1. Describe your job. (open-ended)
2. Do you like your job? (closed-ended)
3. What was your dream job as a child? (open-ended)
4. If a friend of yours was offered the chancellor position at another university, would you recommend it to them? (hypothetical)
5. What did you learn from observing your father in this position? (personal)
6. How does your wife enjoy being the first lady of Liberty? (personal)
7. Is it true that we are building a new athletic practice facility? (agree/disagree)
8. If you could summarize the chancellor position in one word, what would it be? (hypothetical)
9. Take me through a regular workday. (open-ended)
10. Do you plan on keeping this job within the family through future generations? (personal)
